"pap" stands for Pyelonephritis-associated pili. These pilli are encoded by pap genes. They are assembled via conserved chaperone-usher pathway. Pap D is periplasmic immunoglobulin (Ig)–like chaperone and being a chaperone it assists the  assembly and delivery of pili subunits to the outer membrane usher PapC. PapA forms helix fiber on the external cell. PapH anchor the pilli to the membrane. Pap E forms tip of the fibrillum and PapG is the adhesin at the end of a tip fibrillum. PapK and PapF are adaptor subunits. Pap A provides a driving force for the translocation of pili subunits across the outer membrane, facilitating outward pilus growth.
