This patient presents today after a nonproductive cough for the last 4 weeks. Last week he had a chest x-ray and it was felt that further diagnostic testing is necessary. Today he underwent a fiberoptic bronchoscopy of the tracheobroncial tree. The images were sent to radiology for interpretation. A plan of care will be determined after the radiology report is read. A cough is a reflex done to clear the accumulation of mucus or irritants away from the respiratory tract. Cough caused secondary to any respiratory tract infections, allergic reaction, flu, diseases of respiratory tract like bronchitis,emphysema,tuberculosis, or due to inhaling smoke/dust or pollutants. The two types of cough are productive and non productive cough. The cough in which the person is able to bring out any mucus or secretion is called as non productive cough.
