Gothic architecture, while Romanesque architecture had round arches, had pointed arches in the roof.
Gothic architecture has cathedrals vaulted in the groin, while Romanesque mostly has vaults in barrels and some vaults in the groin. Two barrel vaults converge at right angles form a groin vault. The effect is four curving surfaces that attract the eye to and from the middle. The areas where the vaults of the barrel come together create ribs which add strength and visual appeal.

We have gargoyles in Gothic architecture (a gargoyle is a grotesque carved or shaped with a spout intended to convey water from a roof and away from the side of a building, thereby preventing rainwater from running down masonry walls and eroding the mortar between them), while in Romanesque there is very less decoration on the outside. The designs of the Romanesque came with large frames. On the other side, there was a slim skeleton in the Gothic designs.

Early Romanesque ceilings and roofs were often made of wood, as if the architects had not fully understood how to use stone to span the two sides of the building, creating outward thrust and stress on the side walls. This development did not take long to manifest, of course, and led from barrel vaulting (simple, semi-circular roof vaults) to cross vaulting, which in the Gothic became increasingly adventurous and ornate. The Goths were a so-called barbaric tribe that held power in various parts of Europe, between the fall of the Roman Empire and the founding of the Holy Roman Empire (so from about the fifth to eighth centuries). We weren't known for great architectural accomplishments. "Gothic" emerged after the fact, as with many art historical terms, to be applied to a certain architectural style.
