Simple sentence
The American promise alive.
Simple sentences can be longer than three words and have compound subjects and compound verbs.
Complex sentence
More Americans are out of work and more are working harder.
A complex sentence has one independent clause and one dependent clause
Compound sentence
I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to take a 10 percent chance for change.
It has at least two independent clauses joined by comma or conjunction.
These sentences can not be changed to some other sentence in order to be grammatically correct.
