b. What combinations give the most absorbance? Why?

When the beam color and the solution color is totally two different colors then the abundance number is larger.

c. How are beam color, solution color, and absorbance related?

ANSWER - Question b:

What combinations give the most absorbance? Why?

  • Light blue and dark red gives the most absorbance (0.96)
  • The most absorbance is obtained when beam color is complementary to the color of solution. In this case the copper solution is light blue (484 nm), and blue substances has a strong absorbance at the wavelength of complementary color of light (see the color wheel below).

ANSWER - Question c:

How are beam color, solution color, and absorbance related?

  • Absorbance (A) is a measurement of the ratio between the intensity of the beam directed at the solution (I0) and the intensity of the beam transmitted by the solution (It):

  • The color of solution determine the color beam-type that is most absorbed (see wheel color image) by the solution.
  • A high absorbance means that the colored solutions absorbs almost completely the energy of the beam color light passed trough the solution. Then if you irradiated a colored solution using a beam with the complementary color, the absorbance of the solution will be high.
