Answer #1

IR spectra give information about the functional groups present in the molecule. The following information can be deduced from each spectrum.

COMPOUND 1

Broad signal at 3400 cm-1 for alcoholic O-H stretching

Signal at 2932 cm-1 for alkyl C-H asymmetric stretching

Signal at 2861 cm-1 for alkyl C-H symmetric stretching

Signal 1712 cm-1 for C=O stretching - most probably ketone

COMPOUND 2

Broad signal at 3500 - 3600 cm-1 for alcoholic O-H stretching

Signal at 2992 cm-1 for alkenyl C-H asymmetric stretching

Signal at 2917 cm-1 for alkenyl C-H symmetric stretching

Signal 1769 cm-1 for C=O stretching - most probably ester
