Professional accountability is the foundation and heart of nursing practice. Professional accountability makes to resolve the problems and to maintain the standard of care. Accountability helps the nurses to improve the clinical skills, evidence-based practice and improve patient quality. It molds the professional behaviors of the nurses. It defines the roles and responsibilities of a professional nurse in an organization. It helps to overcome the challenges and provide direction to work. It helps to maintain standards in the clinical practice. It develops an organizational culture and a good work environment.
Nurses demonstrate professional accountability in clinical expertise by clearly communicating with the patient and give preference to the patient to make decisions. For example, some patients give more preference to religious practice and will not accept for blood transfusion. In such cases, the nurse is accountable for a clear explanation to the patient about the need and importance of blood transfusion. The nurse must also ensure the family members for positive patient outcome.
Nurses are responsible for their own's action and clinical judgment. The nurses should apply the nursing process based on the priority and needs of the patient. Nurses have to decide herself in the clinical intervention by assessing the patient condition and wishes. For example, Nurse taking care of an older patient with critical illness. The patient wishes for DNR and to die peacefully. The nurse should accept the patient willingness and get proper consent from the patient or family members.
