Chapter 23:

Understanding the blood supply to the heart is the first step in understanding this system. Describe this process, including blood flow through the heart and the chambers and valves. If you have a great way to help your classmates remember the blood flow patterns, share that information here!

A person who is hemorrhaging has a rapid heart rate. Why? Will the increase in heart rate help with the condition?

Chapter 24:

Find a picture of peripheral vascular disease on the Internet (this can be a picture of what is happening inside of the body or this could be a picture of a patient that is experiencing PVD). Attach this picture to your assignment as well as the discussion post. Next, describe in 150-250 words what is happening to the patient, discussing the pathophysiology behind peripheral vascular disease.

Pick one type of shock and describe the pathogenesis of that specific type of shock. Next, describe appropriate nursing interventions and treatments for your specific type of shock.

Chapter 23:

Hemorrhage causes loss of blood, which reduces the blood volume. This causes sympathetic stimulation to increase the heart rate and force of contraction, thus, to increase cardiac output to meet the body demands.

Coronary circulation, or the blood supply to heart:

Coronary circulation is constituted by blood vessels of the heart wall. Left and Right coronary artery arising from the Aorta immediately after leaving the left ventricle.

Left Coronary Artery (LCA): It travels through coronary sulcus which is present under the left auricle. It divides into two main branches, anterior interventricular branch, and circumflex branch.

Anterior interventricular branch: It is also known as the left anterior descending artery. It supplies to both the right and left ventricles and the anterior two-thirds of the interventricular septum. It travels down to the apex through anterior interventricular sulcus. It rounds the bend, travels a short distance upwards on the posterior side of the heart.

Circumflex branch: In the coronary sulcus it continues around heart and it supplies blood to the posterior wall of left ventricle and left atrium.

Right Coronary Artery (RCA): It supplies the sinoatrial node, right atrium and then it continues along the coronary sulcus under the right auricle and it gives two branches, right marginal branch and posterior interventricular branch.

Right marginal branch: It runs to the apex of the heart and it supplies the lateral aspect of right atrium and right ventricle.

Posterior interventricular branch: It is a small branch which arises on the posterior side from the Right coronary artery. It supplies blood to posterior walls of both right and left ventricles and also supplies posterior portion of the interventricular septum.

The deoxygenated blood from the capillaries of the myocardium is drained by the cardiac veins that run parallel to the coronary arteries. The veins together join to form an enlarged vein, the “coronary sinus.” The coronary sinus empties into the right atrium.

The pathway of coronary circulation is illustrated below:

Aorta Right coronary artery Left coronary artery Posterior inter Marginal ventricular artery Anterior inter- circumflex ventricular artery artery artery Walls of right atrium left atriunm and right ventricle Walls of Ventricular walls Ventricular walls and left ventricle Cardiac veins Coronary sinus Right atrium Coronarv circulation
