Please help with this question regarding the design of a forward-feed double effect evaporator. Will really appreciate it.
(I've edited by typing out the questions, so the question is now clearer.)
Please provide a proposal for the design of a forward-feed double effect evaporator (Figure 1), for which operating conditions are given below.
Figure 1: Schematic diagram of forward-feed double effect evaporator
Configuration: Forward-feed double effect evaporator
Number of effects: 2
Feed:
Feed material: Aqueous high molecular weight solution
Flow rate: 8000 kg hr-1
Concentration: 5% aqueous high molecular weight solution
Temperature: 40°C
Discharge:
Product material: Concentrated high molecular weight solution
Concentration: 40% caustic soda solution
The last effect will be assumed to operate at a vacuum of 600 mm Hg referred to a 760 mm Hg barometer
Estimated Overall heat transfer coefficients:
550 kcal hr-1 m-2 °C-1, and 370 kcal hr-1 m-2 °C-1 in effects 1 to 2, respectively.
Utilities:
Saturated steam at 3.5 kg·cm-2 gauge pressure is to be used for heating. The condensate from each effect leaves at its saturation temperature, negligible radiation losses.
Perform following tasks.
1. Perform overall material balance and overall component material balance, and find mass of steam, mass of evaporation rate in the first and second effects (ms1 & ms2).
2. Do energy / enthalpy balance and find solution temperature and vapour space temperature in each effect. Also need enthalpy distribution. Assume negligible boiling point elevation. Assume average specific heat of 1 kcal·kg-1°C-1 in the first effect and 0.94 kcal·kg-1°C-1 in the second effect. Necessary data may be obtained from steam table.
3. Calculate areas in each effect (deviation in area is within ±10% is acceptable).
4. Calculate steam consumption and analyze operational economy.
5. Recommended number of tubes required for the purpose tube numbers and principal dimensions (such as height, diameter, down take area, actual area). Given height and outer diameter of each tube are 12 ft and 42.16 mm, respectively.

Separation Process Problem 1 [30 marks] A double-effect forward-feed evaporator is used to concentrate a 5 wt% aqueous NaCl solution to a final concentration of 25 wt% The feed enters the first effect at a temperature of 40°C. Saturated steam at a pressure of 2 bar (absolute) is fed to the first effect at a rate of 1500 kg/h, and the vapour from this effect is used to supply heat to the second effect. The overall heat transfer coefficient in...
Evaporation of Sugar Solution in a Multiple-Effect Evaporator. A triple-effect evaporator with forward feed is evaporating a sugar solution with negligible boiling- point rise (less than 1.0 K, which will be neglected) and containing 5 wt% solids to 25% solids. Saturated steam at 205 kPa abs is being used. The pressure in the vapor space of the third effect is 13.65 kPa. The feed rate is 22 680 kg/h and the tempera- ture 299.9 K. The liquid heat capacity...
Please could you answer all sub questions. A forward feed triple - effect evaporator is required to concentrate a 10% pineapple juice mixture from 5 to 70% using steam at 200 kN/m2 (gauge). The feed enters at 2 000 kg/hr at 303 K and the first effect is operated at 105 kN/m2 (gauge). Additional information: 1. The BPR's can be estimated from the following equation: BPR (°C) = 1,78 X + 6,22 X2: 2. The heat capacity of the solution...
Q1. A double-effect evaporator is being used (in forward mode) to concentrate a sodium chloride solution from 4 to 20 weight %. The solution enters the first effect at 298K at a rate of 3000 kg/h, and saturated steam at a pressure of 1.5 bars is fed into a tube bundle in the Ist effect. The steam condenses at 1.5 bars and the condensate is withdrawn at the saturation temperature corresponding to this pressure. The pressure at the second effect...
3-17. A double effect evaporator is fed with a solution that enters the first effect at 40 ° C and must be concentrated from 10% to 50% by weight. For the heating of the first effect, it has saturated steam at 1 at, and in the second effect a pressure is maintained that allows the solution to boil at 50 ° C. The integral coefficients of heat transmission for direct current feeding they are worth 2,500 and 1,500 Kcal /...
(12). An evaporator is fed with 10000 kg/hr of a solution containing 1% solute by weight. It is to be concentrated to 1.5% solute by weight. The feed is at a temperature of 37°C. The water is evaporated by heating with steam available at a pressure of 1.34 atm absolute, corresponding to a temperature of 108.3°C. The operating pressure in the vapor space is 1 atm absolute. Boiling point elevation and other effects can be neglected. The condensate leaves at...
1. There are several evaporators, including agitated film evaporator, long-tube evaporator, short-tube evaporator, and horizontal-tube evaporator. For (a) juice and (b) paste, suggest proper evaporator and explain why you select it. 2. A double-effect forward-feed evaporator is used to evaporate a sugar solution containing Swt solids to a concentrated solution of 25 wt%. The boiling-point rise (BPR) of the solution (independent of pressure) can be estimated from BPRC-1.5x + 6x", where x is wt% of sugar in solution. Saturation steam...
I need help with question 1 and 2, can anyone help me please. 1. steel wire is used to attach a balloon on a solar panel boom so that the actuators can be tested. Actuators are the devices that re used to extend the panels from their slowed position during launch to their final extended on- orbit configuration. The balloon must be filled with Helium gas such that the weight of the panels is balanced. Solar panels and their booms...
T/F (1) Additives added to ethanol will have the same effect on boiling point as the same amount of additives added to water Ethanol changes its solution boiling point with additive mass fraction of 0.15 more than water changes its boiling point with a mass fraction of 0.25 If the activity coefficient of solute A in a solution is equal to 1, A has little to no preference to other molecules around it in solution It is likely that flavors...
