Column is washed with distilled water till eluate is neutral to litmus so as to ensure that no excess acid (used in regeneration of cation exchanger) is present in the column.

Presence of acid and its anion may cause precipitation of salts of Ca2+ and Mg2+ which may cause embrittlement.
