Answer 4. Hard water contains polyvalent cations with their sulphate, chloride and carbonates generally of Ca​​​​​2+ and Mg​​​​​2+ . When Hard water is passed through cation exchanger these cations are replaced by Na+ or any monovalent cation and the water after passing through it left with no polyvalent cations hence considered Soft water.
