ACE inhibitors: Angiotensin II is a vasoconstrictor substance produced by the action of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). ACE inhibitors inhibit the conversion of angiotensin I into angiotensin II, which causes dilatation of vascular smooth muscle. ACE also breaks down another vasodilator substance called bradykinin. Inhibition of bradykinin breakdown results in the accumulation of bradykinin, which causes dry cough.

ACE inhibitors can cause teratogenic effects, so they should not be used in pregnant women.
