There are five word parts for a medical term. Many of the medical terms are formed by the combination of these five word parts, but some may be formed with only a few of these parts. Different word parts of a medical term are:

Prefix

It is present at the start of the word and if present, can alter the meaning of the word.

Suffix

It is the end portion of the word that changes the original meaning of the word.

Word root

It is the main part of the word that expresses the basic meaning of the term

Combining vowels

It is generally placed after the prefix or root and is used for the pronunciation of the medical term. ‘O’ is usually the combining vowel.

Combining form

Combination of word root and combining vowel is called the word root.

It is a combination of combining forms ot/o/rhin/o/laryng/o

rhin/o is the Word root

Nose

laryng/o is the Word root

Larynx (Voice box)

Hence, Otorhinolaryngology is the study of ear, nose, and throat (voice box).

Myc/o/sis

Combining form Myc/o

Myc is the Word root

Fungus

o is the Combing vowel

sis is the Suffix

Action, state, or condition

Hence, Mycosis is the condition caused by fungus.

1.68 Poliomyelitis

Poli/o/myel/itis

Combining form Poli/o

Poli is the Word root

Gray (gray matter)

o is the Combing vowel

myel is the Word root

Spinal cord

itis is the Suffix

Inflammation

Hence, Poliomyelitis is the inflammation of gray matter of spinal cord.

Neo/nat/o/logy

Combining form nat/o

Neo is the Prefix

New

Nat is the Word root

Birth

o is the Combing vowel

logy is the Suffix

Study of, science

Hence, Neonatology is the study/science of new born.

1.70 Endarterial

End/arteri/al

End is the Prefix

Within, inner, containing

arteri is the Word root

Artery

al is the Suffix

Pertaining to

Hence, Endarterial denote pertaining to within the artery.

4.56 Electromyography

Electr/o/my/o/graphy

It is a combination of combining form electr/o/my/o

Electr is the Word root

electricity

my is the Word root

muscle

o is the combining vowel

graphy is the Suffix

Process of producing a picture

Hence, Electromyography is the process of taking the picture of electrical activity of muscle.
