COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE (CAM)

  • CAM is a group of procedures that are used together with conventional medicine(standard medical treatment) to enhance its effectiveness.
  • Little difference between complementary and alternative medicine is complementary medicine can be used together with conventional medicine whereas alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine.

CAM cannot be used as a key component for conventional medicine but combined therapies provide more benefits like:

  • Reducing side effects
  • Natural and healing therapies
  • To make feel better
  • Boosting the immune system

COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE THERAPIES

ALTERNATIVE MEDICAL SYSTEM

This system involves both theory and practice

Examples of theories used in western culture:

  • Homeopathic medicine
  • Naturopathic medicine
  • Acupuncture

Examples of theories used in non-western culture:

  • Ayurveda
  • Chinese or oriental medicine

MIND BODY INTERVENTIONS

These therapies enhance the mind’s capacity which in turn affects bodily functions. Healing by touch is one of the most common practices done by early days which will affect all parts of the body.
