The forward and reverse mutation rates at a certain locus in E. coli are A to a 5 x 10-5 a to A 3 x 10-3 a. What are the expected allelic frequencies (p^ and q^) if no other processes are involved? b. If allele “a” is a deleterious recessive, will natural selection be able to easily eliminate it from this E. coli population? Why or why not?

Answer #1

Lets take Initial allele frequencies be:

  • p = freq (A) allele
  • q = freq (a) allele
  • Let u = rate per generation, for forward mutation when A changes to a = 5 x 10-5
  • Let v = rate per generation, for backward mutation when a mutates back to A = 3 x 10-3

At equilibrium, Frequency of A allele

p = v/u+v = 3*10^-3/5*10^-5 + 3*10^-3

= 0.9836

at equilibrium, frequency of allele

q = p = v/u+v = 5*10^-5/5*10^-5+ 3*10^-3

= 0.0164

    QUESTION 2 Climate change is a threat to the existence of many species. Which of the following limits to natural selection hinders the adaptation of species to the new climate conditions? The developmental plans of plants and animals are too complex. They cannot cope with the warmer temperatures. Mutations happen so frequently that beneficial alleles change before natural selection can substantially increase their frequency Many species not have gene variants in their gene pool that are beneficial in higher temperatures. Climate change happens so...

( 4.2 Probability Generating Functions The probability generating function (PGF) is a useful tool for dealing with discrete random variables taking values 0,1, 2, Its particular strength is that it gives us an easy way of characterizing the distribution of X +Y when X and Y are independent In general it is difficult to find the distribution of a sum using the traditional probability...

Two genes control the pathway that makes the blue pigment: The product of gene W turns a white precursor into magenta pigment. The product of gene M turns the magenta pigment into blue pigment. TranslationOverview:The purpose of this activity is to help the students to understand how replication, transcription, and translation are connected. Students will use a sequence from a bacterial gene that confers resistance to antibiotics (carbapenems). They will be asked to apply the knowledge obtained in the class lecture to (1) find the promoter in the sequence, (2) determine the amino acid sequence of a fragment of the polypeptide, (3) "reverse translate" a fragment of the polypeptide, and (4) identify mutations in...

    2. A dominant allele H reduces the number of body bristles that Drosophila flies have, giving rise to a “hairless” phenotype. In the homozygous condition, H is lethal. An independently assorting dominant allele S has no effect on bristle number except in the presence of H, in which case a single dose of S suppresses the hairless phenotype, thus restoring the "hairy" phenotype. However, S also is lethal in the homozygous (S/S) condition. What ratio of hairy to hairless flies...
