LEIOMYOMA:

  • Leiomyoma is the most common neoplasm in women and affecting the uterus.
  • Leiomyoma are the benign smooth muscle tumors that occur in the uterine wall and not metastatic.
  • Leiomyoma are not invasive and occur anywhere on the smooth muscle.E.X: Nipple, scrotum, labia, uterus.
  • Leiomyoma are hemorrhagic / necrotic and well circumscribed.
  • During treatment of leiomyoma the excision can be curable.
  • In microscopic appearance the cells have low mitotic activity with blunt nuclei.
  • Leiomyoma may spontaneously occur in any muscle.
  • Metastatic Leiomyoma after surgery are extremely rare complication.The most common site of occurrence of leiomyoma are lungs and pelvis.

LEIOMYOSARCOMA:

  • Leiomyossarcoma is a type of soft tissue sarcoma.
  • Leiomyosarcoma are malignant type (cancerous).
  • It has been said that leiomyosarcoma are not developed from the leiomyoma.
  • Leiomyosarcoma are usually bulky, invasive masses within the uterine wall.
  • Leiomyosarcoma appears to grow on the middle layer of the blood vessel that is on tunica media.
  • Leiomyosarcoma has poor prognosis.
  • Leiomyosarcoma and leiomyoma are quite difficult to differentiate.
  • In the microscopic appearance it is hemorrhagic and necrotic tissue mets on the lung.
