the following is spectrum of the reaction if the 2 drawn molecules. are there any peaks in either spectra that show peaks of the starting material. i have circled the diagnostic peaks i am looking for

Sol:

To diagonise the circled protons we have to keep in ind the 1H-NMR range for two kind of protons that areas follows:

  1. Aldehydic proton
  2. Methyl proton attached to the keto group

1H-NMR range for them are as follows:

  1. For aldehydic proton: 9.0-10.0 ppm.
  2. For methyl proton attached to keto group 2.1-2.4 ppm.

​​​​​​​There is no any peak in this range in both the given spectra , but Spectrum-D will be more appropiate as the 2-3 ppm region is clean, which is not in the case of Spectrum-C.
