a) C-C bond formation

C has the electronic configuration of 2s2 2p2 in its ground state

In excited state, the electron configuration would be 2s2 2p3

Thus C can make 4 bonds

C can form single, double, as well as triple bond

the orbitals involved are its valence 2p orbitals

Px orbitals form the sigma bond whereas Py & Pz orbitals form pi bonds and the valence s orbital overlaps with the side substituted atoms.

Thus C - C triple bond is formed.

b) N has an electronic configuration of 2s2 2p3

3 valence p orbitals are available for bonding with a lone pair of 2s electrons.

sigma bond is formed between N & H by the overlap of Px orbital of N & s orbital of H
