Question: The San Francisco Bay Area has not had a large (>6.0 magnitude) earthquake in 30 years. While another large quake is inevitable it is impossible to say when the next one will hit. There was a 68-year quiet period from 1911-1979 for example. Why do you think earthquakes are so hard to predict and what is an example of another process (human or natural) that is similarly difficult to predict and why?

Answer #1

Earthquake happens when lithospheric plate moves due to the drag forces exerted by the semi solid asthenosphere. When these plates moves then seismic waves are produced which are responsible for earthquake and since plates moves continuous therefore we can have very frequent earthquakes but all these earthquakes are of very less magnitude and for a larger magnitude earthquake high magnitude of stress is required and this much stress requires large time interval and if during this period small magnitude earthquakes happens then this will increase the time interval as energy is lost during small magnitude earthquake and this all depends on the type of formations and stress regimes and therefore it becomes almost impossible to predict earthquakes. Apart from this events of volcanic eruptions are also very difficult to predict and this happens due to the same reason.
