A patient comes in with a large cyst-like lesion which is erythemic and hot to the touch. He rates his pain at an 8 when it is touched. He states that this just happened overnight and did not have any injury prior that he knows of. Research MRSA on the CDC website and find out what should be done for this patient. What testing should be done and what type of medications should be given? What did you find at the website that you did not know before?

A. Management of MRSA infections may include:

  • pus if present , should be drained.
  • culture and susceptibility testing of drained material should done to start anyimicrobial therapy.
  • wound care and hygiene should be maintained
  • Hand cleanliness - using soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub between caring for patients should be in practise.
  • Hospital rooms and equipment should be thoroughly cleaned.
  • Keeping patients with MRSA separate from other patients - either in a single room or shared with another person who has MRSA.
  • Healthcare providers clothing - wearing gloves and gown over clothing while caring for MRSA patients.
  • Visitor clothing - wearing of gloves and gowns should be done
  • antimicrobial therapy (in cases of possible cellulitis without abscess) should be started as soon as possible.
  • patients with MRSA will be asked to limit movement around the hospital, avoid gift shops or cafeterias and stay in their rooms.

    b. culture and susceptibility testing should be done aling with other routine tests to check the sensitivity of different antibiotics and appropriated antimicrobial agent should be started.

C. following medication can be givn in mrsa positive soft tissue infections:

  • clindamycin
  • tetracycline drugs - doxycycline and minocycline
  • trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole
  • rifampin
  • linezolid

D. From cdc site i came to know that about one in three (33%) people carry S. aureus bacteria in their nose, usually without any illness. About two in every 100 people carry MRSA. Although many people carry MRSA bacteria in their nose, most do not develop serious MRSA infections.
