An environmental organisation would like to locate and monitor barrels of radioactive waste which were recklessly thrown in to the Pacific by a thoughtless country many decades ago. The material is ‘sealed’ inside steel barrels and maybe in several thousand metres of water in mountainous underwater terrain. Your task is to design robust machines for deep water which can both track the barrels down and non-invasively identify some of the radioactive constituents.
