The leg curls mainly act on the knee joint. They aim to strengthen the knee flexors. Knee flexors consists of hamstring group of muscles : semitendinosus, semimembranosus and biceps femoris.
Leg curls are performed while lying prone on exercise table and flexing the knee joint against resistance or load. The knee flexors acts as agonists while knee extensors act as antagonist.
The upward phase is marked with knee flexion with knee flexors i.e. hamstrings acting as prime movers.
The lowering phase is marked by knee extension with knee extensors i.e. quadriceps femoris acting as prime movers.
