THE AGE OF THE CRUST The cross section below shows the oceanic lithosphere (thinner, more dense) ond continental lithosphere

1) The figure above is a collision between two convergent plates (one is oceanic plate and another is continental plate). The oceanic plate is thinner and dense whereas continental plate is thicker and low dense. Thus, the thinner and dense plates get subducted beneath the low dense and thicker continental plate (which is overriding).

2) Divergent plate boundary is on the oceanic plate as shown in figure above where two plates move apart from each other.

3) Old oceanic lithosphere gets subducted beneath continental plates.

4) Old continental plate may change but stays at the surface.

5) Very very old oceanic lithosphere does not exist, it gets subducted on the Asthenosphere.

6) Very very old continental lithosphere does exist on the Earth.

7, 8) Continental lithosphere is older than oceanic.

9) Very very old oceanic lithosphere (4 Billion years) does not exist, it gets subducted on the Asthenosphere.
