Answer #1

Question 1.

there are basically 2 types of EDTA titration

  1. Direct titration
  2. Back titration

When the cation is directly titrated against the standard EDTA solution it is known as direct titration.

And when excess of EDTA solution is added of known value and then it is back titrated using another standard solutions like zinc.

In both the cases EBT also known as erichrome black T indicator is used.

When the direct titration is possible it is done but when it is not possible i.e. when a proper indicator is not present and cation bonds to EDTA to form stable conplexes back titration method is used.

Question 2.

To know what is firnation constant of calcium with EDTA we first must know what is formation constant

formation constant-

The equilibrium constant value which tells us about the stability of reaction between a metal and a ligand (Ca and EDTA in our case)

The formation constant for EDTA and Ca2+ is 10.65

Since this value is high means it is strongly attached to EDTA to form ligand and hence there will be no suitable indicator and we have to use the back titration method instead of direct titration.

I hope this helps if you have any query or want more detailed explanation feel free to ask in the comments section below.

A titration is a procedure for determining the concentration of a solution by allowing it to react with another solution of known concentration (called a standard solution). Acid-base reactions and oxidation-reduction reactions are used in titrations. For example, to find the concentration of an HCI solution (an acid), a standard solution of NaOH (a base) is added to a measured volume of HCl from a calibrated tube called a buret. An indicator is also present and it will change color...
