This reaction is Vilsmeier formylation reaction of indole. The reagents used in this reaction are POCl3 and DMF(N,N - dimethylformamide) . The combination of DMF and POCl3 generates a carbon electrophile (iminium cation) , which reacts with indole at 3-position. After work-up with aqueous acid , a formyl group (-CHO) is generated at 3- position of indole.

This reaction is diazotisation reaction of p-toluidine. In this reaction , a solution of p-toludine is prepared in dilute HCl and the solution is cooled in ice -bath . Now, ice cold solution of NaNO3 is added in solution of p-toludine in HCl to form p-toluenediazonium chloride. p-toluenediazonium chloride, on further, reaction with water form p-methyl phenol.
