The distinction is important because while movement along demand curve is only due to price changes, shift in demand is due to various other factors like consumer income etc. The managerial implications are different for both the situations. For a movement along demand curve, the management just needs to determine the price which will lead to specific demand generating maximum revenue. Shift in demand will require various other strategic decisions due to probable new opportunities or threats
