Two battery chargers (one for your laptop and the other for your phone) are plugged in at the same powerpoint.

a) If the phone charger consumes 30 W of electrical power when operating, how much current would flow through it when connected to a household supply? (Show your working and explain your answer.)

b) Explain how the laptop battery charger would be able to provide electrical safety to the operator in case of a short circuit. The laptop charger has three prongs while the mobile phone charger has two prongs.

c) Explain how the current and voltage will be distributed between the laptop and the phone chargers (Assume that the laptop battery charger has a higher resistance compared to the mobile phone charger).

Answer #1

a) P= V*I ( Here circuit is assumed to be resistive so of is 1)

I= P/V

I= 30/230

I= 130mA

b) In case of short circuit fault current will flow through earth pin of laptop charger to earth ensuring safety of personnel working and also safety of device.

c) Both circuit are in parallel connection so voltage will be same in both device. Laptop battery charger will take less current compare to mobile charger as it has higher resistance as current division rule in parallel circuit.

    Are the statements true or false and briefly explain your choice, in words or pictures When three bulbs are put in parallel across a battery, more current leaves the battery than when only one bulb is connected to the same battery. As a sound wave “dies out” (gets quieter), the amplitude, speed and frequency all diminish. The two ends of a permanent magnet have opposite charges. When three bulbs are put in series across a battery, more current leaves the...

    Under the hood of the Toyota Camry your instructor owns are two fans that are used to cool the air conditioning condenser and cooling system radiator. These fans are connected in series when the refrigerant pressure in the air conditioner is below 200 psig (only light to moderate cooling is needed), and are connected in parallel when the refrigerant pressure is higher than about 210 psig (occurs on a hot day when lots of cooling is needed and car is...

    your neighbour John would like to discuss one of his technology ideas with you. Last summer, he was driving south with his friends to spend a day at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. After passing one of the wind farms next to the M74, he realised that he could install a wind turbine on the car to charge the car’s batteryand to generate electricity while the car is moving, thus recovering energy and improving fuel efficiency. Being safety conscious, he also thinks...
