Ans: During meiosis the gametes sperm and egg are produced, which have half the number of chromosomes from their progenitors. And because of recombination and independent assortment each gametes have different set of DNA  which when combines with its counterpart to form zygote, it express a new type or different type of characteristics from the parent.
