Answer #1

Although both Bentham and Mill thought that the moral value of an act was determined by the pleasure it produced, Bentham considered only quantity of pleasure, but Mill considered both quantity and quality of pleasure. Mill regarded intellectual pleasures to be much more valuable in utilitarian terms in comparison to sensual pleasures. For example, Mill would support a student not attending his best friend's birthday in the night before his examination because this action would ultimately hamper his academic performance. Bentham's theory would not make such a distinction.
