Standard deviation is a very important statistic, it measures the spread of data distribution and it measures the typical distance between each data point and the mean. Without calculating the standard deviation you can not tell whether the data are close to the average or whether the data are spread out over a wide range.

A low standard deviation means that most of the numbers are close to the mean.

A high standard deviation means that the numbers are more spread out.
