Answer #1

Redox reaction: The reaction in which both oxidation and reduction takes place, that reaction is called as redox reaction.

Oxidation: Increasing oxidation number is called as oxidation:

Reduction: Decreasing oxidation number is called as reduction.

Oxidizing agent: It self reduced and oxidise the adjacent one.

Reducing agent: It self oxidised and reduce adjacent one.

+3 -2 +2 -2 +2 -2 +4 -2

Fe2O3 + CO -----> FeO + CO2

Here Fe oxidation number decreases From +3 to +2. So Fe is reduced.

Here, C oxidation number is increased from +2 to +4. So C is oxidized. both oxidation and reduction takes place. hence it is redox reaction.

Oxidation: C

Reduction: Fe

Oxidizing agent: Fe2O3

Reducing agent: CO

0 . +1 -2 +2 -2 +1 0

Ca + 2H2O ------> Ca(OH)2 + H2

Here H oxidation number decreases From +1 to 0. So H is reduced.

Here, Ca oxidation number is increased from 0 to +2. So Ca is oxidized. both oxidation and reduction takes place. hence it is redox reaction.

Oxidation: Ca

Reduction: H

Oxidizing agent: H2O

Reducing agent: Ca
