This is the main maintenance shop area of a petroleum processing plant.  There are three mechanics in the shop full time that perform various millwright related tasks from welding, to pipefitting, to general maintenance and repair.

In this picture there are a lot of hazards which i have seen, workshops are hazardous environments both by nature and the activities people carry out in them.

physical & chemical hazards shown in this picture.

1. Chemical substances in unmarked containers.

2. Chemical splashes are there

3. Flammable items are there.

4. Electric shocks,burns risk & fire.

5. Lack of adequate ventilation.

Hazards - hazards means danger! when we refer to hazards in relation to occupational safety and health the most commonly used defination is 'A hazard is a potential source of harm or adverse health effect on a person or persons.

types of hazards-

1. physical - slippery floores, objects in walkways, unsafe or misused machinery, excessive noise, poor lighting, fire.

2. chemical - gases, dusts, fumes,vapours and liquis.

3. Ergonomic- poor design of equipment ,workstatiin design or workflow, manual handling, repetitive movement.

4. Radiation- microwaves, infra red, ultraviolet, lasers, x- rays and gamma rays.

5. psychological - shiftwork ,dealing with the public ,threat of danger.

6. Biological - infection by bacteria ,virus, fungus, contact with infected persons.

Hazards can be controlled by following these necessary things.

* prevent contact - prevent workers's body or clothing from contacting hazardous moving parts.

*be secure - firmly secured to machine and not easily removed.

* must not have shear points, jagged edges or unfinished surfaces.

* must not prevent worker from performing the job quickly and comfortably

* allow safe lubrication - if possible , be able to lubricate the machine without removing the safeguards.

legal obligation of employer -

1. Under the OSH law employers have a responsiblity to provoide a safe workplace which is free from serious recognized hazards.

2. An complain can be filed against workplace hazard, and employer has the responsibility to solve it.

3. Employer should monitor the health of the employees who are working in petroleum shop.

4. Employer should monitor the conditios of workplace under their management and control (eg cold, heat, dust levels, fumes and so on)

5. Employers have both ethical and legal responsibilities to advise employees of potential hazards in workplace.
