Rank the following carbonyl-containing compounds in order of reactivity towards nucleophilic acyl substitution.

Most reactive to least reactive?:

Acetic anhydride, hexyl propanoate, benzamide, benzoyl chloride

The general trend in reactivities of carbonyl compounds:

acyl halide > acid anhydride > aldehyde > ketone > ester ~ carboxylic acid > amide > carboxylate anion

Given,

Acetic anhydride = anhydrides

hexyl propanoate = ester

benzamide = amide

benzoyl chloride = acid chlorides

Thus, benzoyl chloride ((Most reactive) > benzamide > hexyl propanoate > Acetic anhydride (Least reactive)
