  • Buncombe County struggles with a high suicide rate, in 2010 there were about 19 suicides per 100,000 deaths there.Asheville reputation as a progressive, eccentric community could contribute to the country's higher suicide rate.
  • Suicide behavior is a serious and persistent public health problem with devastating effects on victims, families, and communities. Non fatal self inflicted injuries from suicide attempts requiring hospitalization are much more common than fatal self inflicted injury.
  • Males were 3.7 times more likely to die from suicide than females, females were 1.4 times more likely to be hospitalized and 1.3 times more likely to visit hospital for self inflicted injury than males.
  • Adolescents between 10 and 19 yrs of age had the lowest suicide rates, and adults had higher suicide rates between 25 and 50 yrs of age.
  • Most suicide victims were males, whites, non Hispanic between 25 and 60 yrs of age,married, and educated for 12 or more years.
  • The most common circumstances surrounding suicide were being having a current depressed mood, a history of mental illness, or currently receiving treatment, and a crisis within 2 weeks.Of the 87.8 % of suicide victims tested for alcohol, the presence was found in 30 %
  • Other circumstances include intimate partner problem, other relationship problem, physical health problem.
  • Majority of suicides occur in houses or apartments.

For suicide prevention

  • Promote awareness that suicide is a public health problem that is preventable.
  • Promote efforts to reduce access to lethal means and method of self harm.
  • Develop and implement community based suicide prevention programs.
  • Implement training for recognition of at risk behavior and delivery of effective treatment.
  • Improve community linkage and individual access to mental health and substance abuse services
  • Improve and expand surveillance system.
  • Provide relief and good living atmosphere for those suffering from problems.
  • Make them confident enough to face problems in life and to foresee future other than committing suicide.
