In the IUPAC or International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry system; systematic names are given to all organic compounds.
The most importance feature of this system is that any given molecular structure has only one IUPAC name and any given IUPAC name denotes only one molecular structure.
The concept used to solve this problem is to write the IUPAC name form the functional group, number of carbon atom and substituent’s.
The general rule for the IUPAC nomenclature of an alkyne and cyloalkyne:
1.Find the longest carbon chain that contains the maximum number of carbon atom in a straight chain.
2.Number of Carbon atom is given by Greek prefixes like meth, eth, prop, but pent etc.
3.For saturated compound use ‘ane’ suffix.
4.For double bond use ene and for triple bond use yne suffix.
5.Start the number of carbon chain to that end where a substitute got minimum number.
6.Give the location and name for every substituent’s in alphabetically order as the prefix of the parent carbon chain.
7.For the cyclo-alkyne use cyclo as prefix.
Part a
The given structure is as follows:
Structure 1 contains 7 carbon atoms in a straight chain.
Structure 1
The IUPAC name of the compound is 3-propyl-1-heptyne.
Part b
Structure 2 contains 7 carbon atoms in a straight chain.
Structure 2
Structure 2:
The IUPAC name of the compound is 4-methylhept-2-yne .
Ans: Part aThus the name of given compound is 3-propyl-1-heptyne .
