Compounds that can be vaporized without decomposition are usually studied using Gas chromatography. The advantages of Gas chromatography are listed below:

  • Compounds can be separated in reasonable time.
  • Sharp peaks are obtained during study of molecules via GC.
  • Highly sensitive detectors are present which can be collectively used with a mass spectrometer as mass spectroscopy is a non-destructive technique.

The disadvantages of Gas chromatography are listed below:

  • It is only applicable if the compounds are thermally stable and volatile.
  • Some of the detectors are destructive in nature.
