If barium is present we can have a test for precipitation method, since Barium forms insoluble white precipitate when we add sulfate anion.

Ba2+ (aq) + SO42- (aq) ==> BaSO4 (s) --- which is white in color

Normally we add aqueous solution of sodium sulfate because which forms soluble salts with most of the anions. We don't know whether Barium is in the form of chlorides or nitrates or acetates, whatever the anion associated with barium it will be safely converted to soluble salt with sodium cation.
