Generally, the new materials which are required for hard tissue engineering (e.g, bone) are termed as biomaterials. Now, biomaterials should have the two basic properties (among other properties which depends on the application).

Property 1: Biocompatibility:

Biocompatibility is the material's ability to be compatible with the body tissue and also its ability to perform the desired medical function without causing any undesirable effect such as reacting to other parts of the body. As our body can reject the material. So, the material should have properties which are acceptable to the body tissue and it should not be toxic to the body.

Property 2: Toxicity of the Biomaterial

It must be ensured that any material which is to be used in tissue engineering must not be toxic to the body. The toxic elements can cause damage to the other parts of the body. Thus, the material should be used which isn't toxic to the body. It shouldn't be harmful or have carcinogenic effects on the body.

Thus, after ensuring that these two properties are met by the material we can use it for the particular medical therapy.

Other properties of biomaterials also include: Cost of material, Biodegradability, Bioinertness etc.
