The concept used to solve this problem is based on the types of the lipid molecules. The lipids can be divided into groups depending on the size and the structure of the molecules.

Fundamentals

The lipids are mainly divided into three groups: triglycerides, steroids, phospholipids. All these types of the lipids are made up of small molecules, which are known as the fatty acid molecules.

Part 1

The steroids are the molecules consist of multiple rings. The molecules consist of 5 or 6 membered ringed structure. The steroids are abundant in the biological system, and are present in the membranes.

Part 2

The fatty acids are made up of the small compounds. These small compounds are known as the fatty acid molecules. They have unbranched carbon chain with the even number of the carbon atoms.

Part 3

Glycolipids are the lipid molecules, which are found in association with the carbohydrates. They play a vital role in maintenance of cell membrane stability. They are very abundant in the biological membranes.

Part 4

The lipids are the molecules, which can be stored in the tissues, to be used as the metabolic fuels. The lipid are stored in the form of the triacylglycerol forms.

Part 5

The sphingolipids are the lipid molecules, found in association with the amino alcohols. They are very much abundant in the nervous system of the humans. They do not contain glycerol.

Part 6

The glycerol can be esterified. The esterification of the molecules of the glycerol results in two fatty acids and the phosphoric acid molecules. The phosphoglyceride is formed in the process. They are very abundant in the cell walls.

The compounds that contain a fused ring system are called Steroids. These have three 6-membered rings and one 5-membered ring. Some of these compounds are found in the biological membranes.

Part 2

The Fatty acids are the building blocks for many lipids and they generally contain an even number of the carbon atom and an unbranched hydrocarbon chain.

Part 3

The Glycolipids are formed when a carbohydrate is glycosidically linked to a hydroxyl group of a lipid. Examples include gangliosides and cerebrosides. These are also found in the biological membranes.

Part 4

The Triacylglycerol are the storage form of the lipids, accumulating in the adipose tissue and they can be used as metabolic fuel. The compounds have a polar part, made of three ester group and a non-polar fatty acid tail.

Part 5

The Sphingolipids are made up of a long-chain amino alcohol joined, either by a glyosidic linkage or a phosphodiester linkage, to a fatty acid. These do not contain Glycerol. They are abundant in nervous systems.

Part 6

When glycerol is esterified to two fatty acids and a phosphoric acid molecule a Phosphoglyceride is formed. These are found in biological membranes.
