Answer #1

SPECIMEN AND TYPE OF PROCESSING:

1. Centrifuge after clotting - Aldosterone in a red top

REASON: Aldosterone in a red container should centrifuge after clotting. There is no anticoagulation or clot activator in the tube. So after clotting centrifuge, the sample is required

2. Centrifuge immediately - Ammonia in a green top

REASON: Green top tube contains Heparin sodium for the anticoagulant effect so after collection of sample it should centrifuge immediately.

3. Do not centrifuge - Blood culture in an SPS tube (Sodium polyanethole sulfonate)

REASON: SPS tube (Sodium polyanethole sulfonate is an anticoagulant and a fundamental material used to develop bacteria of blood samples from the patients in the culture media. So it should not centrifuge immediately.

4. Centrifuge after clotting - BMP in an SST

REASON: SST tube(Gold top serum separator tube). It consists of clot activator and serum gel separator. So centrifuge after clotting will help to separate the serum and the sample.BMP refers to the basic metabolic panel.

5. Do not centrifuge - CBC in a lavender top

REASON: Lavender top tube contains Ethylenediamine tetraacetic phosphate is applied to stop the blood from clotting. So it should not be centrifuge. If it centrifuges the blood components and plasma will separate.

6. Centrifuge after clotting - Copper in a nonadditive royal blue top.

REASON: Royal blue top is of two types one with EDTA and plain tube. Samples were taken from the tube and centrifuge after clotting.

7. Centrifuge immediately - CSF in a clear plastic tube

REASON: CSF in the clear plastic tube should be centrifuged immediately to separate the CSF and plasma.

8. Centrifuge immediately - Cyclosporine in a green top

REASON: Green top tube contains Sodium heparin for the anticoagulation of the blood and centrifuge immediately to prevent coagulation and mixing of heparin with a sample.

9. Centrifuge immediately - Electrolytes in a PST.

REASON: Organosulfides/organopolysulfides are used as additives in electrolytes and centrifuge immediately.

10. Centrifuge immediately - Glucose in an anticoagulant grey top

REASON: Grey top tube contains potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride which functions as a preservative to conserve the glucose in the blood.

11. Do not centrifuge - Hemoglobin A1C in a purple top

REASON: Hemoglobin A1C in a purple top contains EDTA. It restricts blood from clotting. Haemoglobin A1c outcomes should be obtained from the blood should not be clotting

12. Centrifuge immediately - Hepatitis C qualitative RNA in a PPT

REASON: PPT(Pearl white top tube plasma preparation tube) EDTA for the sufficient anticoagulation of the blood. So it must be centrifuged immediately to ensure anticoagulation.

13. Centrifuge immediately - PT in a light blue top

14. Do not centrifuge - Zinc in an EDTA royal blue top

REASON: Royal blue top tube contains EDTA acts to prevent the blood from clotting. So centrifuged the sample is not necessary.

15. Do not centrifuge - urinalysis specimen.

REASON: Urinalysis specimen should not be centrifuge. There is no advantage to centrifuge the specimen. Generally urine samples are used to identify the agent causing the urinary tract infections and other infections.
