Question
when builders were constructing a sidewalk they forgot to include an expansion joint between the two of the segments, L = 2.8 m at To=20 deg C
Assume the opposite ends of each segment are fixed and the linear equation coeeficient is 12.9 x 10^-6 deg C-1.

see picture for answering a and b

Answer #1

A)

Change in length, dL = L a dT

dL = 2.8 x 12.9 x 10^-6 x (43.33 - 20)

dL = 8.43 x 10^-4 m

Height, h = sqrt[0.000843^2 + (2 x 2.8 x 0.000843)] = 6.87 x 10^-2 m

B)

Gap = 2 dL = 1.69 x 10^-3 m
