1. Protonation : proton from HBr adds to -OH group of Alcohol , giving an intermediate and Br^-.This reaction can proceeds via S_N1 mechanism which proceeds via a carbocation intermediate or via   S_N2 mechanism :  primary alcohols proceeds via S_N2 mechanism since these have highly unfavourable carbocations.

2. S_N² reaction :Br^- acts as a nucleophile , displacing water molecule.
