Answer #1
Concepts and reason

Bromination:

A bromination reaction is the addition of a bromine atom on a molecule through the electrophilic substitution mechanism. The reaction involves the bromonium ion as an intermediate. Alkenes contain unsaturated double bonds, which undergo addition reactions. In an addition reaction, the weaker pi bond converts into two new stronger sigma bonds. The addition reaction is regioselective based on the reagent used.

Fundamentals

Bromine addition to the alkene is trans phase addition to the double bond through a bromonium ion as the intermediate.

The bromine molecule is partially polarized; the alkene will attack on the positive charge side by pushing the electron cloud towards the other bromine atom.

Here, the alkene is electron rich, so this acts as a nucleophile while the bromine molecule acts as an electrophile.

The reaction mechanism:

Step: 1

Alkene attacks on the bromine to form bromonium ion.

Step: 2

Bromide ion attacks at the backside of the bromonium ion to form trans-dibromo product.
