In most developing countries, the empirical studies show that there is extreme inequality in the distribution of education. A small section of the population is very highly educated and the majority of the population has practically no education at all. India is a good example of this phenomenon, South Korea is an exception. Discuss the possible reasons of educational inequalities and also suggest changes in education policy that may achieve a more equitable distribution of education.

ANSWER:

The educational inequality refers to a system under which all the sections of society are not provided an equal opportunity to get education. India has not shown appreciable progress in educational sector. Educational facilities are unequally distributed among the socio-economic, caste, sex, regional, and occupational groups of the population. In India changes in economic, political, and social life are main causes of educational inequality. Those who are educated take the maximum benefit. The bureaucrats and elite of the society who are educationally superior in comparison to other sections of the society try to resist changes. They want to maintain the status quo and are opposed to social changes. The main reason is that they do not want others to challenge their position and status within the society. The small cities and villages do not have better schools and colleges for the children. Majority of the schools lacks the basic infrastructure such as manpower or furniture thus fostering inequality in the educational level. Education inequality also arises from the quality and standard of knowledge and study provided by numerous institutes. Education is a right and it is important this right must be fiercely guarded.

To overcome this problem it is vital to equalize the share of resources among all school systems. Government should put a focus on teachers as a central force for change in the level of education, and address a team to pay special attention to at-risk schools and districts, to monitor and ensure the progress. Furthermore the government should stress on NGOs as well as CSR activities carried out by large corporations for propagating quality education among deprived sections
