In aqueous medium bromine undergoes electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction with para substituted phenol to give the intermediate where the ortho positions to phenolic to phenolic -OH group are substituted with bromine atoms. This dibromo intermediate in aqueous acidic solution will get rid of the sulfonic acid group to give the product which is 2,6 – dibromo phenol.
