Question

The images represent three samples of nitrogen dioxide, which is the pollutant responsible for the brown color of the atmospheric pollution. At high temperatures, nitrogen dioxide decomposes to nitrogen monoxide and oxygen gas.

Use the particulate model below to answer the following questions.

(b) (c) (a)

A plot of 1NO21NO2 versus time is linear. Using this information, identify the factor by which the rate will increase in model (c) if the number of molecules is increased by a factor of 2.

Answer #1

The plot of the change in concentration of NO2 vs time is linear which means that the rate of change of NO2 is first order in NO2. Thus, the order of the reaction is 1 with respect to NO2.

Consequently, when the concentration of NO2 is doubled, the rate will double. Similarly, reducing the concentration of NO2 to half its initial value will reduce the rate of the reaction to half the initial value. Since the number of molecules of NO2 is increased by a factor of 2, i.e, there are 24 molecules of NO2 in (a) instead of 12, the rate will increase by a factor of 2 and thus, there will be 6 molecules of NO2 in (c).

Review Problem 5.042 A pollutant in smog is nitrogen dioxide, NO2. The gas has a reddish brown color and is responsible for the red-brown color associated with this type of air pollution. Nitrogen dioxide is also a contributor to acid rain because when rain passes through air contaminated with NO2, it dissolves and undergoes the following reaction: 3NO2(g) + H20 - NO(g) + 2H+ (aq) + 2NO3- (aq). In this reaction, which element is reduced and which is oxidized? H...

Dinitrogen tetraoxide and nitrogen dioxide are two gases that exist in equilibrium at a range of temperatures. NO2 is a reddish brown gas while N204 is colorless. At High Temperature the red color is strong. || At Low Temperature the gas has less color. If we represent the equilibrium as: 2 NO2(g) = N204(9) We can conclude that: 1. This reaction is: A. 10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
