Answer #1
It is better to use water only.
Water itself is a good solvent for recrystallization of benzoic acid, since benzoic acid has a poor solubility in cool water, but a high solubility in hot water. Since benzoic acid is much more soluble in hot water as compared to cold, small amounts of hot water are added to dissolve the benzoic acid. If the hot, saturated, aqueous solution of benzoic acid is cooled, the solution becomes supersaturated, and the supersaturated solution crystallizes.

using the solvent pair (methanol/water) will lead to the higher solubility of benzoic acid in the solvent pair at ambient temperature, leading to the difficulty of recrystallization of benzoic acid in a high yield.
