Case 4:

Michael is working as a senior production manager in Alex Garment House, a textile company. He is fully aware of corporate politics and favoritism in companies. Michael recently faced such corporate favoritism when three workers were hired in the production unit by senior manager without taking his advice.

As a production manager, Michael is responsible for assessing the suitability of candidates in his department but the set rules were not followed in recruitment of three people in the company. On the contrary, the senior manager also recommended the all hired workers for promotion before the probation period of six months as per company rules. This incident created discontents in other workers who were already working in the company and it adversely affected the labor productivity in the company. There was two ethical issues in this case. First, the set rules of company are violated in hiring and promotion of some workers and second, workers already employed in the company are not considered for promotion.

The primary stakeholders in a production company such as Alex garments are workers, consumers, shareholders and creditors. Workers are individuals working in different capacities or roles in a company. Consumers are people who buy the products and services of various companies and are sole determinant of the profits or loss of a company. Shareholders are owners of specific equity shares of a company and are eligible to receive dividends in the company's profits. Creditors are lending groups or institutions such as banks that lend money to a company for its operation, expansion, up-gradation and other activities.

In this case, there are two possible alternatives. The three persons should be interviewed and judged by production manager of Alex Garments and they should be hired only upon successful completing the set technical criteria for the jobs. Second, company should invite applications for workers in local news papers and websites and should conduct a comprehensive hiring process that would ensure hiring of deserving candidates as workers.

The ethics of the above-mentioned alternatives are zero corporate favoritism, partiality in recruitment policy and fair treatment to all workers. Open recruitment ensure judgment of candidates''s abilities for specific jobs that cannot be judged merely viewing the bio-data of candidates. Second, when suitable persons are hired as workers in a production company, it doe not generate any anxieties, discontent in other workers of that company.

The practical constraints of the above-mentioned alternatives are time and cost constraints. It is often seen that there are large number of applicants for a specific job and it becomes very hard for hiring team to select most suitable persons for the job from large number of job aspirants. This increases both time and costs of recruitment of a company.

Companies should raise the eligibility criteria for jobs in order to restrict the number of applicants that will restrict number of applications for the particular job. Only few of applicants should be invited for interviews and tests that will ensure fairness, time and cost efficiencies of the recruitment process. However this action is not considered as socially justifiable especially in a region that has high unemployment rate.
