The office is a small, all- male environment, known as The Bullpen. After her first two months at work, the company is set to hold its annual summer outing. As the outing is some distance from her house, Victoria is pleased when one of the executives, Luke offers to drive her home. During the drive, Luke invites Victoria for a casual dinner. She feels pressured to accept. Since they are currently working together on a deal, she hopes that the dinner will be a great opportunity to collaborate on business. Instead, she is ill at ease when Luke continuously bring:s up personal matters Back in the car, Luke is even more insistent that Victoria comes to his house. She is extremely uncomfortable, but sees no way out of the situation, feeling as if she cannot decline. At his house, Luke makes a direct advance toward Victoria. By this point she has had enough and is visibly upset. Immediately, she confronts Luke as to whyhe is placing her in such an inappropriate situation. Victoria then calls a cab and departs, mulling over her options Victoria is unsure what action to take. Her first two months on thejob were going so well and she wonders what impact this incident will have on her work environment. She does not feel comfortable approaching her firms HR department, a one-man operation who seems to exhibit and condone the firms bullpen attitude. Victoria fears that if she does not speak up the advances will continue, but considering that she has to work with Luke on their current deal, she wonders if forgetting the incident will make it go away faster What should Victoria do?

The above case study is more likely based on the Female candidate working almost male dominated place and her corrective actions against tackling the situation on prejudice. While Victoria is upset about the situations that she is going through still she should have to make sure that she proofs her strength and caliber in practical working conditions.

1. What are the relevant facts -

  • Victoria joined as Analyst at boutique Investment Bank, that means that she had proved her Knowledge and Skills to get the Job.
  • She is working in a male dominated organization.
  • Her colleague offers to drop her home late night. The activity is acceptable as being a generous person it is our duty to help female candidates security part.
  • Victoria feels pressured to accept the invitation for dinner, Still as of business collaboration she finds it acceptable to know each others nature and behavior.
  • Luke continues to put pressure on Victoria so that she visits at his place. This act puts some stress that the intention of Luke was not good or he was making Victoria uncomfortable.
  • Luke makes advance towards Victoria, that is somehow not acceptable.
  • Victoria departs on cab whole confronting that uncomfortable situation.
  • Victoria feel uncomfortable to approach her Firm's HR department.

2. What are the ethical issues -

  • The first ethical issue is of The Integrity of a Female candidate working for the firm. She is a newcomer and hadn't gone through the on job situations in her life. It is the duty of the firm to maintain her comfort zone so that she feels alike others. As in the case study she feels uncomfortable to seek help from HR Department.
  • Till the time Luke invited for dropping her to home was good but putting unnecessary pressure on Victoria was not good. As she felt uncomfortable, and putting her into a situation of fear is not acceptable ethically. If the intention of Luke was that he can do whatsoever with a female, that is not acceptable socially also.
  • There is a problem of Behavioral activity.

3. Who are the primary stakeholders -

  • In the above situation the primary stakeholders are Luke and Victoria.

4. What are the possible alternatives -

  • All the male candidates should be provided proper induction to take care of the activities while behaving with the female candidates in-house as well as outside the organization.
  • There should be creation of an environment that being a female she can go up to the management for any of the problem she is facing while working.
  • There can be possibility for the firm to hire more female candidates.
  • The firm should provide separate cab services to female candidates on the grounds while organizing events.

5. What are the ethics of alternatives -

  • Corporate culture will be maintained properly.
  • There will be a sense of equality among the co-workers.
  • No Issues related to security of female will arise.
  • The organization will keep the bond intact as team.
  • Good number of female candidates will make sure female representation.

6. What are practical constraints-

  • If we talk of practical approach to the situation Victoria took right decision going out from the place of Luke, but she didn't advanced to the HR department that is not correct at her part because Luke can take the advantage again and will try to dominate her finding her weak. She should discuss to the management though she will have to work with Luke jointly in the same firm.
  • She can talk with Luke on the incident and assure herself that the same will not be repeated.
  • Victoria being female have to go through these situations on practical conditions bet she is the common citizen and the Labor laws are applicable to all whether a male candidate or a female candidate.
  • The correct action will ensure her self respect and the respect of future female candidates coming to the organization.

7. What actions should be taken -

  • As already mentioned above that there should be proper induction program for all the male candidates.
  • Luke should be warned for the behavior he had done with Victoria and the firm should assure that he behaves well with Victoria while working with her in future and should not act out of animosity.
  • A proper code of conduct should be issued to make comfortable environment.

As of the case study Victoria is working for the organization like the other male candidates and have all the rights that are being entertained for the male candidates. She should fight for herself whenever she finds that her self respect and integrity are on stake because of misbehavior. She should be in contact with the management as she is the only female working in the firm and continued loop with the upper management will be helpful for her.

Again there are strict rules made by the Government to ensure that firms are taking proper care of the Female candidates working within the organization. The ethical part is also ensured.
