Total stockholder's equity is the owner's residual claim of a company's assets after its liabilities have been paid.

A company raises finances from its owners and other outside liabilities or creditors (other than owners). The company needs to pay back these finances or loans or claims at a specified date. Assets are used to pay them back. When all the liabilities or claims of other than owners are paid back then whatever is left, belongs to owners. It is residual claim and is called as stockholder's equity. It is distributed to the owners.
